Visitors Become Dolphin Explorers at Dolphin Research Center
Grassy Key ... Dolphins are much more than pretty faces with great smiles and big-time athletic ability. At Dolphin Research Center (DRC), where scientists study dolphin cognition and behavior, the dolphins demonstrate that they're also terrific when it comes to "thinking" games. In Dolphin Explorer, a new interactive program, DRC guests can become part of the research efforts. The program begins with a brief orientation that explains the types of studies done at the center. Participants then join staff on a floating dock to meet the dolphins and play together on actual research-related activities. It's a great way to help the dolphins show off their smarts, and learn more about their amazing abilities.
Dolphin Explorer is offered daily on a walk-in basis and is limited to four participants. The cost is $75.00 per person in addition to general admission. Participants must be 5 or older and children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a participating adult. The ability to understand English is a must. High-resolution photographs of your experience will also be available for purchase. For more information, visit Dolphin Research Center's website at www.dolphins.org, or call 305-289-1121.
Founded in 1984, Dolphin Research Center is home to a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. Located at 58901 (mile marker 59) Overseas Highway, Grassy Key, Florida, the center is open daily for the public to see narrated behavior sessions and educational presentations, and to participate in interactive programs with the dolphins. The nonprofit organization is funded by admission and program fees as well as by private donors and members. In addition to being one of the most highly respected education and research facilities in the world, DRC is the Licensed Manatee Rescue Team for the Florida Keys and is an accredited member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums.
